New Fuel Tank

Post by MattD »

Well it arrived today, lets hope it fits

Made to my drawing by Alloy Racing Fabs, £230 all in.

I've copied the sump cup from Rob's titchy tank & added a bit more capacity (its about 8 gals).
Should allow me to get rid of the swirl pot & 2 pump system I've got currently... that keep's breaking :(

Bullet pre-filter & high pressure pump bolt on the flanges under the tank in line with the outlet, then run straight to the fuel rail. Happy Days....

Looks nicely made Matt . Exit's smaller than mine though. Will you foam fill it :?:
I just love the Stylus but she keeps swallowing £££ !

Rob

If I fill it with foam the armature type sender won't work.

So no, not planning to foam fill it. The baffles should be enough.

Quite pleased with it, the guy who made it did a good job.
There's some nice funnel detail where the 2" hole in the base drops into the 3" sump.

Curborough.... Stoneleigh.... It'll be Monday before it goes anywhere near the car.. :)

Looking really nice and looks like the thing i need, and i think there's others that might have interest in it, Phil (been posting on locostbuilders about a fuel injection tank) and maybe more.

I can't claim credit for the internals of the ' cup ' design THAT ---- was Tims design 8) and Paul Dunnell thought it was exactly what was required when he asked me what fuel supply I would use , adding that swirl pots were unneccessary :o

Many racers who I compete against told me I was wasting my money cos it just wouldn't cope with the ' G ' forces on track . They all run swirl pots BUT didn't understand the internals of the cup design which is quite critical

Matt, have you fitted the tank already?

He's fitted it , driven to Goodwood on the 10th as a tester and been down to Cornwall over the weekend but not heard any news since --- hope the weather was good with no hood

Just looked at it again and was wondering if it doesn't miss a fuel return connection? I see the fuel supply at the bottom, the filler neck, breather connection next to the filler neck and the sender hole. Or isn't that a breather connection?

Werner , he's connecting the filler up to the aircraft style filler cap he had before which has a breather. The pipe you see next to the filler pipe IS the return

I'm getting a new tank made at the moment and planned on using a 110mm diameter cup with a 80mm hole from the tank feeding it so that it can't slop back out - what's the secret to the internals of the fuel cup design?

Cheers

You've got the KEY requirements really apart from making sure the exit pipe is 12mm or more , exits the centre , immediately turning 90 degrees ------ making sure the pump is on the same plain as the exit pipe too. Nice big 10mm pipes to the throttle bodies and return. All this means that you wont need a swirl pot plus two pumps.
The ' cup ' design is simply to not allow starvation under hard cornering on track --- with foam added(as mine has)and a 20 to 30mm ledge over the larger cup --- it'll be impossible for that to happen. Tim and I came up with it and Paul Dunnell confirmed it was sufficient to do away with two pumps/pot .
This is almost what Matt has done --- pipe size a touch smaller.(that's why he took all the pic's under my car  )

Thanks the info Rob, due to fitting issues caused by the De-Dion I have to exit out of the side of the cup at the bottom rather than straight out of the bottom, outlet is 12mm and I plan to push a number of foam fuel cubes up it to reduce any chance of starvation.

I'm really struggling to find a sensibly priced 12mm pre-filter as £50 seems a joke for the Sytec Bullet one, I have found one for about £22 delivered that seems pretty similar http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/SYTEC-FUEL-INJECT ... .m14.l1318

anything else out there worth looking at?

I think mine was a weber supplied filter but it went after the pump as advised by Dunnell and the tank is foamed to the top. Fuel should not have to go up to a pump BUT drop into it , if you want to avoid twin pump/pot etc.(very key to success) --think my under tank pic's are on this forum somewhere
