Nice day for a drive

Hi All

Well my Stylus did another faultless 200 miles on the road yesterday. 8)

Had to go to Goodwood Horses for a tech problem, so took the Stylus rather than the tintop.
No getting away from it the car is awesome on the road.
Had a nice dual carriageway run from home up to Teddington, then a blat down to the office in Andover.

The A272 Winchester > Petersfield > Midhurst > Petworth road is a great motorcycle route.
Even better in a wound up Stylus, so good I had to do it again in reverse !!

Dropped in to Goodwood circuit & got a noise test done.
OK for Testday / 105 Sprints
Not OK for normal track days

New exhaust needed maybe, but I think even Rob's big bore jobbie won't get under 98dBs ??
Might do on a STD spec Zetec ??

Cheers

Matt

Nice & simple....About 170 BHP.
Bog Std 2Ltr Zetec, ARP Rod bolts, Throttle bodies, Capri type 9, Quaife ATB 3.9.

Needs a BGH close ratio box & shorter axle ratio for the sprint's I intend to do with it.
And Raceline 190/220 head work & cams for the full deal. Winter project  .
Don't think I need Rob's full race setup just yet.

Means the gearing is quite long on the road, passed a Cayman doing around 100mph, on the cam in fourth yesterday (just to prove a point).
He thought he was going quickly, until a Stylus slipped past. Don't know who was more surprised me or him !
You certainly feel your own mortality when you remember you're in a plastic bathtub with wheels on it. I'm the first to admit, that kind of thing is best left to a track, but sometimes.....

I'm sure a Turbo'd Rotary will give some excitement, if the rubber is wide enough & you can put the power down ! What's your guess at power output ??

i built the engine to the same spec as my last rx7 which made 460 fly hp at 1.2 bar, 380 atw's. BUT, on that car i had a much bigger turbo and all the supporting mods to go with it, ie, bigger injectors, i/c & 3.5 inch exhaust etc, but at this stage i just want to get the car running and take it from there, so i'm running the stock turbo and a small exhaust and i/c etc.

The standard rx7 makes 210 fly hp at 0.4 bar. I will run about 0.8 bar which is about max for the stock injectors with a fuel pressure tweak. The engine has whats known as a street port so I am hoping to make 230 - 250 atw's (280 fly hp) but anything over 200 atw's and i will be happy ..... for now.

Once i know the car is running ok and everything else is holding out and i get some more money i will get a bigger turbo and aim for 300 atw's.

I'm running a capri LSD Atlas so that will hopefully help with traction and last a bit longer. Once its together i will see what wheels and tyres i can get under the back end as i have the rear arches from the RT

Matt,

Does the flyscreen keep you out of the wind decently while driving at speed?
And if it rains?

Thinking of chopping the windscreen as it would save a lot of cash (heated windscreen+fitting+bracing+wiper+washer), a lot of weight and time. (and also a lot of swearing)

And with my length i think I would be looking straight at the top/over the window anyway.

Maybe Alec can tell me if he looks through the window or over it? He's a bit taller then me.

I reckon you'll need to drive with a helmet/wide view visor or you'll end up getting stones or flies in your face/eyes

hi! not very active on here at the moment as i am in the desert again suffering the heat! i look through my screen but only just and my seat is right on the floor pan. i did however go out in tims orange car around donnington a few years ago before it had a screen and that was very windy to say the least!

i'd say come and have a look at mine but i'm not home for another 2 weeks and she's not on the road at the moment!

a windscreen it is then.

I've been several times to saudi arabia and it's wicked on the road. Going from bloody speeding ferrari's to mules with charriots and all at the same time in the same place.

First time I rented a car, big mistake, afterwards the guy at the company i was working for picked me up and brought me back with his max sized Toyota Landcruizer tank

Hi Werner, hope you are OK :)

Windscreen off certainly saves some weight, & would simplify SVA.
When I cut the screen off, I got rid of a lot of other things that had taken time to source & fit.
All the bits you mention. Also simplified water pipes & wiring behind the dash & on the motor.

Plus sides are:-
Easy performance gain (ie less weight, less drag) - Definitely noticable.
Wind in the face motoring - good if you like it, just wear sunnies on a hot day 8) .
I also got fed up with getting blinded by either fogging up or headlights from other cars.

Down sides are:-
Nowhere to attach a hood, if it rains you get wet. :( I'll get a tonneau shortly.
Also colder than a windscreen car, just the gearbox to keep you warm.
Wind in the face motoring - can be bad too.
The aeroscreen doesn't do too much, you're in the airstream.
You get bugs, wasps, stones, rain, oil, washer fluid, etc in your eyes & mouth.
(& if you're travelling at 80mph, so are they when they hit you).
Its dehydrating too - your breath & any bit of moisture (spit, tears, etc) is wisped into the airstream.
If you're actually going somewhere, wear a crash helmet.

I don't regret chopping the screen off at all. That & taking the carpet & leather seats out.
It totally changed how I percieve the car.
Makes it more of a lunatic sprinter, than a comfy touring car, which actually means I use it, instead of polish it.
