Hi,
I've been reading around and apparently it's best to avoid getting a Q plate. But why?
Anyone?

Q plates have a bit of a stigma attached to them and some people think that they are not proper cars. You only have to look at the likes of Paul Hooper's car on the the old club pages to realise that this is not true in most cases. Most people will try to get an age related registration to avoid the Q plate.

Something else then.
If I have the right papers of a donor MK2 escort. What parts do I need to use to get a "age related" plate?
The thing is that I want to use a much more modern engine and a T9 sierra gearbox.
But i've read somewhere that I have to use all major parts of a single donor except one.
So is it possible to get a age related plate when I let it SVA'ed with the 4 speed gearbox of the MK2 escort?

If you have the documents for the Mk2 and want an age related plate you have to use two main components from the Escort. If you want to use the type 9 gearbox you can say it was fitted to the escort as it does not have to be the original box. If I am wrong which I hope I am not as this is what I will be doing also someone else will let us know.
Hi - I'm going for the Q plate - reasons - I did not want the uncertainty and messing about with a donor car. The regs as to what you must have seem to change with who you ask, even officials (and the weather!) - the 'goal posts' have moved a lot since I started 6 years ago. You need a cat/injection if your engine is newer than (think of a number) - used to be 1994, then 1995, now my VOSA/SVA form says 1-Aug-1997. My engine is Nov97 but I'm not going to wait for the date to change again, as I went straight for the cat/inj from the start. It's cost me dear of course but will go all the better for it. Steve&Steve had the car on the rollers for over 4 hours and got 141HP out of my 1.8 115HP version.
Also I don't want people to think that it's just a 30 year old Escort with a glassfibre body - and there is a link with Q ships from the war which packed a very unexpected punch.
Yes I've got the T9 box, lightened flywheel & clutch from Dunnells, works a treat, can't wait to get on the road next week (MOT)
You are allowed to drive (insured of course) to an MOT, an SVA, a weighbridge and finally the chassis no/engine no inspection.
Cheers - Don
