Upper and lower ball joints

Post by Sook »

Hi Everyone,

The mechanical overhaul of the car is going well, but I'm having trouble identifying the origins of the upper and lower ball joints. Two of them have seized and need replacing, so if anyone could help me it would save me loads of time taking them off and then trawling through parts manuals to find ones that match!

Cheers

Hi Dave,
The top joint is from an old mini suspension knuckle . The bottom wishbone joint is LEYLAND SHERPA rod end part number QR1774RHT (QUINTON HAZEL) and 5yrs ago was £13-45p :)

Rob.

By the way I just noticed that these bits and the part numbers are on this website under build/parts main menu !
I just love the Stylus but she keeps swallowing £££ !

Doh! Just saw that!

Do you know of any suppliers, as the QH is only aimed at trade customers. Or would it be easier to get in touch with Tim and get some from him?

Thanks

Shouldn't be a problem , I just went into CAFCO but other local to you parts suppliers should do them . Tim can certainly help you though.

Right I've got hold of the upper and lower ball joints listed on the build section of the website, and I've hot another problem. The joints fitted to the car look like this:

The joints I've got look like this:

My car is a Sylva not an SSC. Has there been a change in componentry with the change in owners? Think I'll give Tim a call....

Ooh ! that looks horrible . How the hell did they get rusty like that . All the cars I've seen whether STYLUS FURY etc , have all been powder coated . Anyway , it looks Siera or Escort bottom wishbone , not fabricated but the top looks Fury/Striker ? so my info would be all wrong ------ Sorry. What is the car and how old is it ? Put a pic' on here.

Rob.

I can't help with the bottom joint but I'm fairly sure the top is off a Vaxhaul Chevette.

Oh yes , I remember that now because a few people put them in back to front which cocked up the camber. That's why Mark Fisher eventually changed to the same as SSC , SYLVA likewise to avoid build prob's. All down to NEVILLE POWELL who originally fabricated the SSC chassis and had a lot of imput regarding the suspension . Needle roller bearings in new stlye rockers with the mini top joint I referred to.

Thanks Guys, you're lifesavers! I'll give Neville a call and see if he knows.

To answer you questions about the car, it's a Slyva Stylus not SSC, completed in 95 I think (hence the rust!). I bought the car from Al Wood last July and have been replacing bits of it ever since as money and time has allowed. It's certainly helping me with my mechanical knowledge!

I'll post a pic when I get home!

Right, the car is finally back on the road! Just in time for the good weather! Feels a bit better after putting some new discs on the front, but on the first drive the water temperature sensor has gone loopy and the odometer has started sticking!

I still need to replace some bits of the suspension. If I unbolt the shock from the lower wishbone (with the suspension unloaded) will the shock extend much? I.E. will it go ping and end up in the next county?!
