Holiday visit

Post by stylussprinter »

Yesterday , I was very near Snetterton after taking our friend to lunch and looking around Bressingham -- SO , said ''do you mind if we a little drive around before going back for a pot of tea :?: ''
Nobody objected , job done , off we trailed through the country side. I said ''Snetterton must be not far from here'' ---- 12 miles later we came across it so drove all the way into the pit area to see what , if anything , was going on
The ladies thought that was it , we'd just turn around and head for home  I got out and chatted to a few guys testing Subarus ready for ' time attack ' (a tuners contest of about 6 rounds ) Apparently their lap times were 118 sec's ish , although they were quite cagey . Then I moved off to a better viewing spot and watched bikers ripping round for 20 or so laps before pleasing the ladies and going home
I've never been to Snetterton before so it was nice to see some of the layout and watch for a while . My appetite's now wetted to get the Stylus up there and see what lap times I can do 8) Not sure if I'm living in cloud cuckoo land to think maybe 115 sec's is on the cards :?: These 'time attack' cars are very silly bhp but also heavy so drift around a lot ----
It's 135 miles for me from BUCKS so maybe next year
I just love the Stylus but she keeps swallowing £££ !

i'd be up for that also, i have never been to snetterton track although i was brought up nearby.

It would be very interesting to see how you got on as the high power jap cars are huge bhp but like you say weight is against them.
Help! just starting out

The problem with Snetterton is that it has two long straights, which can be a bit dull.
The 750MC bike-engined race cars are doing 77secs (Fireblade engined) and 74secs (Busa engined), and the Zetec kit cars are doing 78secs, so I wouldn't think you will have a problem getting under 115secs! Unless of course you mean 1m 15secs, which is a different kettle of fish! :|

Yes , I think that's what the guy meant , he did say --- 1 --- 18 and not 118 sec's as I typed out

Thinking about it, with huge power, and great long straights, that would make alot more sense, even if they do have to bimble through the corners.
In that case... errr... good luck. Maybe on slicks you could beat their time? (the times I gave from 750MC are on road tyres, A048s probably).

H'mmm , never having driven round it you can't expect to ' shine ' but it'll be a lot of fun trying

so a zetec powered kit car is as quick as a 4 - 500 bhp scooby/evo etc. Thats pretty impressive, even more so for the bike engines with only 140-160 ish hp.

Are the bike engine cars so good cos of the weight aspect or the power band/revs they have.

Don't think it's power , more likely the very lightweight chassis/engine/box combination which means VERY good cornering grip and exit. A decent hyabusa with sequential box thrown in a race chassis being around 385 kgs ---- it's got to go round hasn't it , provided you can pedal it that fast. I've seen plenty of Ferrari's on track when I've tested that should have blown me away but they don't then sulk and go home early
Personally I'm far too lazy to concentrate on keeping a BEC on full song . Much rather have a ' proper ' car with grunt from the bottom up so I can concentrate on steering the bloody thing where it ought to go
An ULTIMA with full rose jointed suspension plus a small block Chevy chucking out 500 bhp plus would do it for me 8)

it is essentially down to the weight, which means that you can: brake later, corner quicker, and get on the power earlier.
for outright straight line performance there is no substitute for big power, but that generally comes with more weight, which is harder to lump around in the slow down / speed up / twisty bits.

i went around snetterton on my 2 wheel cock rocket when i was posted to coltishall when i first joined the air force. i had a good few days there. that was back in 1998. i'd love to get the stylus on there if i could but its quite a way for me. maybe i could tie it in with a holiday up that way! i'm hoping to have my car back on the road in the next couple of months as i miss driving it! my audi diesel doesn't excite me at all!

Matt D. is trying to get me into a charity day up there that he has an invite to so you never know , I may get there this year :?: Don't have slicks though , one day perhaps when I've got a dry sump

I would say I've probably got the very best wet sump you can get from RACELINE ----- but I'm on the edge of safety with semi-slicks/very high cornering speeds/232bhp . Being a FORD , I overfill by 1cm over the max stick level plus use Redline Race 30 wt & ZX1 Extralube
Slicks , I believe , would take me to a teeteringly dangerous edge where I could lose a VERY expensive engine

If I'd just stuck a cheap secondhand engine in then maybe it'd be worth a go for the fun

blimey, i thought you could get baffled sumps that would survive all race conditions. Does that mean that all full on race cars have baffled sumps?

Plenty wont have dry sumps but if their cornering speeds don't exceed a certain ' G ' force then a well baffled sump will do the job. Serious race cars will be dry sumped. The cornering speeds I previously did before the upgrade didn't warrant a dry sump BUT Dunnell did say that I was now close to needing one , particularly now I'm running semi-slicks / soft compound SO down graded the rev's to 7700rpm before ' cut ' to give me a margin of safety . According to him I really ought to have a 45 psi low oil pressure warning light because the 7.5 psi standard one will be too late when/if I see it light up
If I'd gone the whole ' hog ' and fitted a dry sump system then he would have left the power at 243 bhp at 8300 rpm --- it was cheaper to cut the rev's but at least I know what the dyno said on the print out when the engine was run in  ----- 232 bhp will do , not many very expensive cars pass me on test days

I just keep my eye on it --- oil pressure that is  untill I can afford the dry sump
