Air Scoops

Post by rossco61 »

Have Emailed Rob recently re fitting a Catalytic Converter into the left side body sill. 'Tis fraught with dangers as a Cat. Conv. gets VERY Hot. Rob did mention back somewhere that I was having troubles complying with the Aust. Design Rules. Well, the ADRs were relaxed just recently such that a Cat Conv. is no longer necessary in a FiberGlass bodied car because of the fire risk. One major hurdle passed !!! However, one still needs to supply lots of cooling air down past the still, rather Hot Exhaust pipe.
The usual way is to cut or drill several large holes, some as large as the Exhaust box, in the lower sill.
This always struck me as rather rough & ugly. There has to be a better way !!

There is! A NACA Air Scoop, as used on Aeroplanes.
Highly efficient, very neat, can be made by any builder OR can be purchased & fitted as required.
Try "Google" for naca air scoops or naca air vents or naca air flow with/without corner baffles or naca design specs.
This latter will bring up "recumbents.com/wisil/nacaduct/naca-duct.htm which has some design drawings that we can use
plus some info on that Blokes Racing Bike using a Naca Scoop to keep him cool !!
Also, Revlimiter.net/mods/duct.html
If I have remembered the right one, this shows how an air duct was fitted into a pop-up headlight cover to duct lots of air into the Pod Filter.

Another link led me to a supplier of the naca base units ---- for you Blokes, in UK.

All very interesting & I am sure, much better than a series of holes !!
Cheers, Rossco.

Getting it in is easy naca duct/holes :?: BUT the much more important bit is getting it away ------------------ I'll keep my many and large holes
I just love the Stylus but she keeps swallowing £££ !

Audi fit NACA style ducts into the engine undertray of several of there newer models - I know cause I managed to rip the one off the my old mans A6 off - replacement from a scrap yard cost £15. Another source is aircraft breakers - I've got one from a Canberra bomber in alloy for £30 of the 'bay.
