Wheels

Post by Berw »

The implant of the SR20 DETt into my Phoenix is progressing well, Engine Mounts and exhaust fabricated, Intercooler in place etc, and they are now doing the wiring and plumbing, and aim to be finished in two weeks time, so we can run a good test session before the next race on 6th December.
But my mechanic want to upgrade the wheels and brakes, brakes are not an issue, we can find some six pots that will fit easy enough when we decide on the wheels, But he wants to fit 18 Inch wheels with Low Profile Tyres and 9 Inch wide slicks. Currently the car runs 7 Inch Wide slicks on 15 Inch Rims and the body has been modified to take these, I can get the body modified again easy enough, but I’d like peoples experience/comments on running such big wheels.

I reckon the 9 inch rims could cause an inner body problem at the rear and most 18 inch rims will be heavier by a big margin. Then the profile required to meet the ratios keeping the gearing similar will be very low. This will totally change your spring/shock set-up . All round ------------ I wouldn't do it without the opportunity to try it before changing --- bit expensive if you don't like what happens to the handling  Bet your mechanic's a young guy :?:
Great for a tin top --- h'mmm :? for a lightweight f/glass kit
I just love the Stylus but she keeps swallowing £££ !

He's not that young, sorted out the cross flow in the Locost yesterday, but yes, big wheels, big tyres and big turbo are his way forward,
I'm going to run the car with the current set up, and then maybe look at options over the winter, that's why in gathering info.
One advantage will be I can get away from 108 PCD, which is a problem, and I can use the current wheels on a Locust I am currently building for a friend.
Changing subject, The instalation of the SR 20 is going great, I need to bring a cable in so I can upload some pictures. Had a good day yesterday, private track day at Sepang 50 Pounds full track for 3 hours and only 12 caars, borrowed a mates 911 Carrera 2, and my mates Locost 1300 Cross flow, as my car is off the road. Interestingly the Locost (on slicks) was faster from turn 2 to 14 , (the technical bit) than a GT3 911, of courdse it was well gone when we reached the back streight.

I think ' kits ' take some beating value for money wise , even if an exotic sports racer licks them at the top end. My recent trackday at Snetterton proved that but like you when I came up against a NOBLE 400 Twin Turbo 3lt , my cars limits were obvious but only after 100mph and not through the corners. If passing had been allowed in the corners I'd have had him. GT3's at Goodwood also hold me up once in the corners because they usually change down whereas I just lift a tickle then push on through

We've definitely got the best deal -- fun for pounds :P
