Silencer

Hi all,

When I bought my Stylus it had a rear exit silencer which soon rusted through and fell off ) I "converted" it to side exit as a temporary fix, but it's way too loud so I've decided to fit a decent (sub 100 db) system with side exit. I'd appreciate anyone's experiences or recommendations in this regard, please. I'm thinking a 6 inch diameter by maybe 24 inches long stainless silencer should do the job, based on what I had on a previous kit car. The engine is a Zetec on throttle bodies running at circa 160bhp. Based on your experiences do people think this will keep it under 100db? Also I've seen Wunoff mentioned as a potential source. Does anyone have any other recommendations?

Kev' , if that's the green Raceline 1.8lt that I sold to M.Berry then it will have an open side vent in gold that I made for it. A 6inch silencer at 24 inches will do the job to sub 100db's BUT only if it's a re-packable and packed with Basalt .(stainless wire wool wrap one layer the perforated pipe and wire tie first) Lightly prod the basalt into the silencer using a half inch bit of dowling -- not hard nor loose -- using finger pressure rather than a fist

VERY important though ---- don't try to keep the silencer within that golden grid and F/glass sill with a 6 inch ' can ' --------- you will eventually cause a fire. Cut 2 inches below the door then right underneath to the alloy extension on the chassis. Open a nice rounded oval the full length of the silencer , clearing the F/glass by a minimum of 20mm. Then you need air in as well so cut very large 3 to 4 inch holes under the sill where the manifold passes --- 4 or 5 if room . Mount the silencer only at the rear end via a 3mm thick circular strap that will bolt into the same holes as the end cap. Then that strap needs an extension 90 degrees to it . That then sits on top of a rubber bobbin which should be bolted onto a piece of alloy angle , itself bolted through the chassis , coming though near the passenger seat.
Too many kit cars have gone up in smoke through big silencers within the sill if not totally exposed.

Yes I am going to cut away the body work to give clearance, and fit the silencer as you suggest. So far I have removed the silencer and all the heatproof matting from the chassis and bodywork (revealing a bit of rust caused by moisture retention). Once I've cut back bodywork I'll replace the heatproof matting and add the extra ventilation holes (thanks for that tip) ...I'll go the repackable route as well.

The reason for cutting right back to the chassis line is for max' airflow out of that area . You wont see underneath anyway from a standing position Kev'. You say the silencer is guarrenteed db's level ---- how is that possible without knowing the engine type and flywheel bhp What quietens 150 bhp wont quieten 170 bhp . You could be losing bhp

It doesn't appear to be repackable Hope it sorts the job long term

Hi Rob, I thought it might be better to cut the grp back to the chassis. More cutting for me tonight then .

I told the suppliers of the silencer the engine and I overstated the bhp a little when ordering. I've bought from them before and they're happy to noise test once it's fitted and at a later date if I get any problems. On a previous kit car I had they supplied a silencer for 96db and 3500 miles later it was still recording the same. Not sure exactly what they pack them with but it's some sort of honeycomb structure which doesn't break up. I'm pretty confident it will be OK. (famous last words)....

Thanks Kev' . I've not actually heard yet that it will be here tomorrow but am assuming he'll phone me once it's collected from Duffee today . That will be a day of ' no work ' for Tim so I doubt he'll want it taking up space in his Sprinter van -- probably had to clear out all his work gear before collecting it
You never know , he may have ordered a complete light weight body for himself while Duffee was at it

I was right he has ordered a lightweight body for himself to go with a new race chassis he will build specifically for the purpose
Don't know how long it will take , finances etc , but when it's built he will enter the WRDA series If he does well the first season , it could ' just ' produce an order I'm sure this is the right approach to sales even if it's not his number 1 priority

I would put money on him doing well straight out of the box
